Abstract
The seminar talk includes nano-scale imaging by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and macro-scale Earth observation by the space telescope. There is a bridge between these two different imaging techniques: light and interferometers. Design of a low noise Michelson and ultra-low noise Fabry-Pérot interferometers will be introduced to implement these techniques to the low-temperature atomic force/magnetic force microscope systems for high-resolution imaging. <10 nm magnetic force microscopy (MFM) resolution will be demonstrated on various samples such as magnetic domains on multilayer films, Abrikosov vortices on type-II superconductors. Radiation pressure phenomena of the light as a cantilever excitation method and its implementation in a microscope system for imaging for the first time will be introduced. For the other side of the bridge, the research area of geometric optics and space telescope systems will be discussed. The design, assembly, alignment campaign of the first indigenous high-resolution space telescope of Turkey, called İMECE, will be introduced. Space-qualified, high-precision mirrors used in this space telescope will be given. A motto in optics, “if you can not measure it, you can not produce it,” will be discussed with our first aspheric mirror manufacturing attempts in Turkey. Finally, nodal aberration theory (NAT) and its importance for optical system design/alignment and the next generation freeform optics will be discussed. Experimental validation of binodal astigmatism in NAT for a Cassegrain telescope system for the first time will also be introduced.  


Biography
Özgür Karcı received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Physics Education in METU (2004) and Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine in Hacettepe University (2015), respectively. He had industrial research experiences over ten years in NanoMagnetics Instruments (Ankara) on low-temperature scanning probe microscopy, various cryogenic systems (10 mK to 300 K), fiber interferometry, and nano-positioning systems. He completed his Ph.D. on developing a high-resolution, low-temperature atomic force /magnetic force microscopy under the supervisor of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Oral (METU). Since 2015, he has been developing the first indigenous high-resolution space telescope at TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute (Ankara). He visited as a Fulbright post-doctoral researcher to the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester (USA) for 2019-2020. He worked in Prof. Jannick Rolland’s lab on nodal aberration theory for optical systems. He is the recipient of the Fulbright fellowship and Turkey Technology Development Association (TTGV) Ph.D. thesis award and fellowship.
